Oscar Gown Predictions 2017

It's one of my favorite times of year again: red carpet season.  Now, after the Globes, SAGs, and the Baftas, we've reached the peak of it all - the Oscars.  For the last two years I've been trying to predict what the stars might wear to the shows, and though I've yet to get one right, I get more and more into it each year.  I try to predict what someone may wear by looking at what they've worn to past awards shows and if they have favorite brands.  This year was a bit tougher than previous years for a couple of reasons; last week was LFW where I had an internship.  Though I loved it, it had long hours leaving me with less time than usual to do my red carpet research.  The other tough factor was that there were a number of nominees where I found myself unfamiliar with they're style as they didn't attend many of the red carpets leading up to the Oscars.  With all that said, I'm rather pleased with my picks, and I'm hoping this year will be the year that I finally yet (at least) one right.

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Emma Stone | Christian Dior Couture
So far this awards season, Emma has worn Valentino, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel.  Where do you go from there?  To me, the only designer you can go to from there is Dior.  Dior's new couture collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri was completely amazing, and it was hard to pick just one look from it.  But after analyzing the colors and shapes that Emma's worn this season, this nude, flower petal gown has to be the winner.

Meryl Streep | Vionnet Pre-Fall 2017
What do you wear to the Oscars for your 20th nomination?  Well, according to WWD you wear Chanel... unless you refuse to pay for it.  I was just reading an article about how Meryl fell in love with a gown from Chanel's most recent collection but was unaware that Chanel never gifts dresses to anyone.  When realizing that and the $100,000 price tag, she quickly backed out.  Instead I think she'll go more understated and wear this subtle but chic black and white gown by Vionnet.

Natalie Portman | Valentino Couture
Alright, I know that Natalie Portman will most likely be wearing Dior considering she is the face of the "Miss Dior" perfume.  But, in my opinion there are a few factors as to why she also won't wear the designer: 1) She wore Prada to the Golden Globes. 2) Actresses will often dress similarly to the way their character did.  I don't think there are very many dresses in Dior's new collection that look early 1960s.  3) She's very pregnant.  With all of those factors being considered, this Valentino gown would be perfect to fit her baby bump while also looking of the same period as her film "Jackie."

Isabelle Huppert | Ralph & Russo Couture
I don't know a lot about Isabelle Huppert.  I know that she's a very popular French actress, and that she may be the dark horse in this Best Actress race.  It would make the most sense to me that she would wear French couture.  I think her final outcome would have more lining than as shown on the runway, but this Ralph & Russo gown would be perfect for this first time nominee.

Ruth Negga | Givenchy Couture
Though I don't believe she has an official contract with Louis Vuitton, I've heard that Ruth is likely to  be wearing the brand.  But since it's not set in stone, let's instead pretend that she can wear whoever because I think this white Givenchy gown would be amazing.  She's said to be the fashion risk taker of the season, and I think wearing a tie with a gown is just the risk we need at the Oscars.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Octavia Spencer | Tadashi Shoji FW17
To be perfectly honest, this isn't my favorite pick.  Octavia Spencer loves Tadashi Shoji, and wears him on most red carpets.  But when I was looking at his most recent collections, I just didn't see anything that I thought looked like something she would wear.  I picked this purple number in the end, and though she doesn't usually wear this shape of a dress, I think it would be a nice change.

Michelle Williams | Louis Vuitton SS17
We all know that Michelle Williams is going to wear Louis Vuitton.  This is a fact.  Do I think she's going to wear this dress?  Unfortunately, no.  The main reason being that Doutzen Kroes just wore this exact dress to the Brit Awards the other day.  I wouldn't have picked this look for Michelle but I had already finished all of my picks.  So I hope that Nicolas Ghesquiere designs an amazing custom look for her, as everything else from the last few collections that could suit the red carpet have already been worn.

Viola Davis | Christian Siriano FW17
Viola Davis loves color.  Throughout this season she's been wearing bright yellows and blues.  I think this orange number would be a great final look for the season.  Sure, I don't think she would wear a slit that high, but the shape of it is also something that she's worn before.  She's also almost a guarentee for the win, so that gold statue would look great against this gown.

Nicole Kidman | Gucci SS17
Another risk taker this season.  She's been wearing lots of elaborate gowns with over the top detailing and long sleeves.  She's been wearing Gucci to nearly every red carpet, and even ending up on some worst dressed lists.  I'd rather see her take a risk and end up on a worst dressed list than be boring.  This Gucci gown, when you ignore the crazy sleeves, it's actually rather chic and classic.  But really, you need those sleeves; they're what gives it the extra punch.  The only difficulty would be sitting next to someone and hitting the person next to you.  That's why I could also see her wearing the pink gown from Gucci's FW17 collection.  I have it pictured below in the bottom left corner.  It's a bit subtler with the sleeves than my 1st choice pick, but it could be a bit more wearable to the show.

Naomie Harris | Armani Prive Couture
Naomie has been wearing a great deal of Armani lately, and I think the asymmetrical, black, column gown would be perfect for this first time nominee.  She's not likely to win, so she wouldn't over shine any of the more likely contenders, but she'll still be wearing couture.

Finally I have a list of gowns that I hope I see there, but I don't have them picked out for anyone specifically.

ROW 1 (from left to right)
Chanel, Dior, Dior, Altuzarra, Badgley Mishka
ROW 2
Badgley Mishka, Brandon Maxwell, Elie Saab, Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli
ROW 3
Naeem Khan, Naeem Khan, Naeem Khan, Bottega Veneta, Gucci
ROW 4
Gucci, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph & Russo, Ralph & Russo, Alberta Ferretti
ROW 5
J. Mendel, J. Mendel

Well, I hope you liked my picks and my attempt at photoshopping the dresses onto the celebrities.  It may not be perfect, but it sure is better than last year.  If agree or disagree with any of my picks, let me know in the comments!  Who do you think the stars will wear?
