Get Lost

After being in Exeter for barely a day, the next morning a few of my friends and I got on a train to Cornwall - St. Austell specifically.  My friend Ash is a huge outdoors person... me?  Not so much.  Nevertheless, we ventured off to The Lost Gardens of Heligan.  The gardens were beautiful with lots of flowers, animals, sculptures, and activities for families.  You do have to pay for the gardens, which I think is worth it, however, if you have time I would try and wait and go on a day when it's not raining.  When we were there it was pouring down rain.  Though everything was still beautiful, it made hiking along some of its trails a bit more challenging as they became muddy and slippery.  Then again, by walking this in the rain I did feel a bit like Marianne Dashwood in that scene from Sense & Sensibility when she meets Willoughby for the first time.  But if you're only in the area for the day, they do have a nice cafe that you can dry off in; I had a tasty cinnamon roll whilst my friend found dairy free ice cream.  Do be aware of the bus times, as there aren't a ton of places close by to stay, so you'll likely need to take the bus to the gardens.  We stayed at the Eden's Yard Backpacker's hostel which was about an hour's journey away from the gardens by bus, but was very nice and quaint.  The owners were lovely and will pick you up from the train station if you need it.  It was a great place to get back to and dry off after a long day in the rain.
